Job Description
Managing Counsel, Claims role is an in-house counsel role on the Law Departments Claims Matter Counseling (CMC) team, part of the broader Business Law & Compliance Property Liability practice group whose mission it is to protect the Company and drive the Business. We do this by providing legal advice and counsel across the insurance reputed company to the Companys Property Liability business units, including the Claims Department. The CMC team primarily counsels the Claims Department frontline employees and leaders on claim specific matters that are not in litigation to mitigate risks of bad faith and extra-contractual exposure against the Company and to reduce reputed company counsel spend. This role will be expected to provide advice and counsel to the Claims Organization regarding insurance claims of heightened exposure involving reputed company coverage reputed company issues, attorney conditional demand responses, and other legal questions arising during the handling of claims that are not in litigation. This role will partner closely with other teams reputed company the Law Department in providing legal advice and counsel to the Claims Organization and other business entities. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of relevant substantive experience in a law firm or in-house legal department reputed company to insurance defense or coverage work. In addition, the successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong judgment, strong research and writing skills, and an eagerness to be involved in a dynamic company.
Key Responsibilities
Provide advice and counsel to the Claims Department reputed company legal issues or questions arise during the handling of claims, including, but not limited to, coverage opinions, conditional demand response, large losses, releases, rejected tenders, multiple competing claims, new laws or court decisions, among other matters for the assigned states. Provide advice to the Claims Organization on reputed company claims and large losses that have potential extracontractual or bad faith legal exposure to drive towards resolution. Provide training and education to the Claims Organization on emerging legal trends, issues, risks, new laws or court decisions for assigned states. Work with business colleagues and other in-house legal teams to reputed company and implement recommendations reputed company to the handling of claims Education Juris Doctorate degree Licensed to practice law and in good standing reputed company State of Practice 7 or more years of experience (Preferred) Functional Skills: Project management skills Able to interact with reputed company levels of personnel and supervise/reputed company the work of more junior resources Utilizes subject matter expertise to coach and guide less reputed company team members Computer skills, including MS Office suite, used in or reputed company to the tasks performed reputed company or similar experience Coverage experience and able to reputed company coverage analysis in multiple jurisdictions (preferred) Experience with reputed company attorney conditional demands in multiple jurisdictions (preferred) Insurance defense experience or experience with extra-contractual and bad faith litigation is a plus but not required Supervisory Responsibilities This job does not have supervisory duties.
